School Athletics Day

On Wednesday, 25 October the annual School Athletics Day was held. Students participated in 5 events: sprints, 800m run, high jump, long jump and shot put push.  Everyone put in a great amount of effort to do the best they possibly could.  Here are some photos from the day...

Diwali

Decorations at Diwali are called Rangoli.

India celebrates Diwali to bring good luck and light.

Wealth is what you get if you welcome the goddess in your house.

Animals are also used as Rangoli patterns.

Lights are what Indians use to celebrate Diwali.

Indians use bright colored chalk, crushed limestone and rice powder to colour Rangoli patterns.

Show, Don't Tell - Character Descriptions

We have been learning to show, not tell in their writing.

Here are some of their character descriptions where they are focusing on show,  not tell.

The ibes-fen-cra-phant-tortoise

It is an ugly sight. A tortoise like back and elephant legs make me scared. And I won't forget the giant, black spiky snippers as pointy as the eiffel tower! As big as a baby at least. The enormous goat horns made me shiver! His face is so black he looks red! He is as short as a leprechaun but is quite bulky. His ears are as big as stones.

Up flew the creature,she has grey shiny wings that show her black veins. As she flies around outside while the wind blows furiously,you could see her sizeable grey snippers stealing babies lollipops.She has horns as massive as a cow ,also light brown curly hair that is as short as a mouse's tail.As she walks down the street everyone is scared of her yellow and brown tail she just crossed the road and she went home and had a nap.

The Bis-conda-cra-elly-ondor-stingray

The sight was out of the ordinary. It had a long pink slithery tongue sticking out of the mouth, claws as pointy as a blade and it’s hard shell around it. It had smooth white horns. I tried to look away but it was too amazing too. I had to do something about this ugly creature. It had blue slimy jellyfish legs floating across the sea I looked behind it and saw it’s mutated wings barfing out his back. He had a sharp wobbly barb on his back that frightened me to death. I knew I had to go after that.

Bis-cra-orse-at-crocodile

It was a good day and I was hiking but all of a sudden I got pulled in a cave. I could not help but notice his huge black pointy nipers that are spiky all over. Right away I knew he was a friendly creature, he only pulled me into the cave because an arrow was heading towards me. He had a regular head and hair but silver shiny horns. He also had huge black wings that blocked the sun coming into the cave but he had blue seahorse legs but he hovered with the wings. With the seahorse legs I  imagined that he could also swim through the water like a mermaid. He turned a round and I noticed he had a long scaley rough tail like a crocodile.

Upcycle Challenge

Today was the school Upcycle Challenge.  Students needed to create a product or art piece using anything that would be thrown out or recycled and change it to make a new or better product, or a product that can be used in a new way. Room 19 students have been working hard and produced some fantastic products.

The Longest Paper Chain!

Today in maths Room 19 had a challenge - who could make the longest paper chain out of 1 piece of A4 paper?

Students could either do this individually or with a buddy. There were many different strategies used and the chains ranged in length from 1.36m up to 6.76m!

Character Descriptions

We have been learning to describe the physical features of a character.  We needed to include adjectives, similes and strong/interesting vocabulary choices in our writing.  Here are some of our descriptions.  Find more on individual blogs.

Nana

Surprisingly my nana’s soft smooth wrinkled skin is like a pillow that is smooth and comfy. When I strolled down the hallway I caught a glimpse of her goldish blazing brown eyes that

Were polished like a sunny sun.Without hesitation I saw white cringe hair like a cloud in the air. After her shower she wore her murky black PJ’s that looked like a dark cave. All of a sudden I saw her colour she was tan like a luminous latex brown.Suddenly she got Up and stepped slowly like a sloth moving to the kitchen.

The Man

Without hesitation, I stared at short and brown hair. I’m not going to lie I am actually impressed how intelligent this man could possibly be. Without warning, he spent most of his life indoors. Surprisingly, he is as lazy as a tired cat. In a blink of an eye, I stared at him outside my classroom and noticed he created all those cool rules. He actually has tiny and small ears poking out of his head

The Lady

As I peer out the side of my eye I could see her move in her slow pace. The wind blows against her making her blonde hair glide behind her like its a cape. I look closely at her skin,  it was glowing like honey glow to a bear. If you listen closely you could hear her brown boots go thump as she walks on the pavement. I got a glimpse of her bright blue eyes. I am walking behind her seeing she is wearing a silky t-shirt and a baggy pants that are as black night.

Worm Farming!

The P.H.S Kaitiaki Leaders (Enviro Leaders) have recently purchased new worm farms. These are used for recycling food instead of sending this to the landfill.

School Speech & Poetry Competition

Today was the School Speech and Poetry Competition.  There were 4 finalists representing their year levels from Year 3 through to Year 6.

Congratulations to Christopher and Ryan, finalists from Room 19, who did a superb job presenting their speeches.

Diamante Poems

We have been learning to write Diamante Poems. 

These poems have two topics that are opposite.  For each topic you have to describe them using adjectives, state what actions they use using verbs and name some items related to them using nouns.

Cook Island Language Week

This week is Cook Island Language Week.

We have learnt the following phrases:
Kia orana - Hello
Ka kite - Goodbye

Meitaki Maata - I'm good thank you

Origami

This morning room 19 has been doing origami by making different creations. Some have been making boxes, ninja stars, fidget spinners, glasses and many more things.

Everyone should be proud of their origami creations.

We had a great time doing origami, and we enjoyed folding the paper and doing creases. It was a great experience in room 19.

We made a origami ninja star that opens and closes, we made it by attaching all the bits together.

We think everybody should be really proud of what they put together. Just about everybody made an origami fidget spinner. Ms Leafberg said if you are a beginner to origami, you should start with the basic shapes and go from there.

The Brain Research

Room 19 have been learning about the different parts of the brain and their different functions.  They have then used Thinglink, an ICT tool, to share the research they have done about the brain.

Holiday Recounts

This week room 19 have been learning to write recounts. We wrote about something we did in the holidays. We have focused on using paragraphs for new events.

Here are some of our recounts.

Bowentown

Finally It was time to go to Waihi.  I went with Tyler, Brooklyn, my cousin, Brad, Aunty Julia and my other cousin, Mickala. We went there because we have never been there before.

We started to unpack our stuff from the car, we had a LOT of stuff for one day. I went to my room and dibbeds the top bunk plus I put all my clothes in the room. Then I went to get my scooter.  It was so packed in the car all the clothes and scooters fell on ME. Yeah ME I got hurt.

A few minutes later we ran to the playground. It was a  huge playground, It had a tramp, slide, seesaw, monkey bars, plus a tunnel. We played on the seesaw with my cuzzie Brooklyn.  I jumped on  the tamp, slide, monkey bars and  I had so much fun i stayed there until 4.00. I loved the playground.

It was time to hire the rocket bmx bikes. It was so cool riding them. We rode the bmx bikes to the beach and the bay it was awesome. Then the next day we hired the go karts it was cool.  I went around the camp with Brooklyn, he loved it. Then it was my other cousin  Tyler, he went down the hill and crashed the go kart and it flipped over. Tyler hurt my arm, both knees and my chin. It was sore.

I was so astonished how different it was to all the other campsites in New Zealand. It was awesome. The one thing, all  the other NZ camp sites are less exciting .This was my  favourite camp site in NZ I have been to in my life.

The Pools

In the school holidays I went to the pools with my mum and my sisters. We went there because we were bored sitting at home, but before that i had to get ready.

Eventually, it was time to go to the pools, so we left around 2-3 and we got there at 3.15. After, we made it to the amazing pools, but first we had to get changed into our togs.

Finally,it was time to have some fun, so we took a dip in the pools. It was as cold as ice. My sister and I had races, sadly I lost. Anyway, then we played with the soaking water-gun, I kept on going under the water so I didn’t get shot. I was also swimming around.

Later, we had to go home, but that wasn’t all, before we went home we went Burger King. I ordered a sundae, a drink, large fries and a bk chicken burger. It tasted super delicious. Eventually, we had to go home and take a break.

I had a great experience swimming around in the freezing pools. It’s great exercise and lots of fun too, but my favourite part was the eating.

Easter Fitness

Today we had a fun fitness session based around Easter.  Everyone had to decorate an Easter egg, but there was a catch. In order to draw a decoration, an exercise needed to be completed first.

Maths Problem Solving

Room 19 have been learning how to solve problems effectively in maths.  

To do this we are given problems based on a real life scenario.  First we are given time solve the problems by ourselves. Then we work in our thinking groups and share our strategies.  We also need to write down any different strategies we learn from our thinking group buddies.

As a group we decide on the most efficient strategy for each problem (the way that would be easiest to solve in our minds).  Then we may have to share this with the class and discuss our learning.
